The members of the Heavy Vehicle Engineers (HVE) Group offer their condolences to John's family, close friends and former colleagues. John provided mechanical, structural and heavy vehicle design and certification services to many businesses and members of the public in the Canterbury, West Coast and wider South Island regions. He worked as a professional engineer for consulting firms and then set up his own practice based in Christchurch. John was a member of IPENZ (now called Engineering NZ) and was a Registered Engineer. He was involved with the establishment of Road Transport Certifying Engineers (RTCE, now called HVE) – a technical interest group of IPENZ. He contributed as the first secretary and also as an active group member. John was a valued colleague and also a mentor to engineers starting out in transport and mechanical engineering, willing to take time to assist others and had a practical approach to design. He was a dedicated Rotary member and was greatly valued by both family and community. Over the years he maintained an interest in engineering, his old green Ford V8 car, and enjoyed golf and overseas travel.
