I was in P3A in his first year at West and have only good memories of his teaching (in maths) and personal good traits as a person as well as a teacher. I remember his strong voice at cadet parades and our class trying to get him to talk about Korea! He has left a good memories for me and I suspect many others. Brian McLay

To Judith and all the members of the Hitchings family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Terry who played such a significant role in our family’s life. Terry was Principal during my years at RHS (1967-71). My dad Tom Whiting was Caretaker for many years and my sister attended the school in the mid-late 70’s. When we met up some years later, Terry took much pleasure in relating a very humorous story about Dad’s interview for the caretaker position. Terry laughed when he recalled this bubbly Welshman sitting opposite him who in fact was firing questions about the role, and only when he was satisfied it suited him, asked “when do I start?” Terry said that never had he felt like he was the one being interviewed and that after the experience there really was no choice but to employ him! Under the guidance and support of Terry, the school embarked on a fundraising quest to support my selection to the 1970 Commonwealth Games. The students and staff door knocked and raised $1,200 toward my fare. In those days only ‘A’ selected athletes (those expected to make a final) were totally paid for. I was a second tier ‘B’ selection. I justified the effort of the staff and students and also my selection by reaching two finals and swimming fourth in one of them. When my Mum died at the young age of 47, the school supported us yet again. If it was not for Terry and the staff, I doubt Dad would have got through this difficult time. I have always held “Mr Hitchings” in the highest regard and still feel proud when I say I attended the school during his reign. More than that though I have the privilege of saying that he was a dear friend to our entire family. A caring gentleman who made such a difference to so many lives. A special husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by you all, and so so many others. With love and genuine affection. Cathy Hemsworth (Nee Whiting)
